I have finally started working on my laptop, trying to get it fixed. I don't know if you remember, but on Thanksgiving night, it died (hence the practically non-existent posts on my blog).
I finally ordered a hard drive for the lap top about two weeks ago. After I picked it up, and hooked it up, the same exact problem appeared....no operating system found. My restore disk wouldn't even boot up...hmmm. So after a phone call with Gateway (boo hiss), and checking my BIOS, it was discovered that my laptop did not even recognize that I had a hard drive or a DVD drive. They thought it was the motherboard.
Next, I did something I should have done to begin with. I took the computer to the campus computer maintenance shop, where for $20 they could diagnose my problem. They also agreed my motherboard was the culprit, but they would try one more thing. They zapped my battery (because sometimes that is the problem they said) and discovered that it wasn't my main battery, but my CMOS battery (one of the internal batteries) that was dead. So they ordered a new one, and hopefully that will fix the problem.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed it's that, and not the motherboard, because we were having trouble finding one without sending the laptop to Gateway.
